"Chris Jackson has a remarkable talent for explaining complicated visual concepts so that anyone can easily digest and incorporate them into their daily workflow. Using a great number of illustrations and examples, Jackson discusses various ways to improve a project's look and structure as well as incorporating virtual camera movements, simulated 3D spaces, lighting techniques, character animation and interactivity. If you get heart palpitations each time you think about taking your toon idea from paper to pixel to vectors, Jackson is the man who can calmly take you out of your tech nightmare."--Animation Magazine

I emailed both Amazon and the publisher regarding the exercise files included on the CDROM from the printed version of the book.Amazon referred me to the publisher and this is the response I received."Thank you for your inquiry.Any of the free companion products are only available with the printed version of the product. So when an E-book is downloaded the free companion product are not included. Please let me know if you have any other questions or need any further clarification."Which is very strange since most companies make the exercise files available for download. This information should be listed onThe product page, to me it makes the ebook version worthless. After seeing the authors comments to this review I purchased the kindle version, contacted the publishers customer service center and got this reply:This CD is a free companion CD that is included with the purchase of a print copy of this book. When you download an e-book you are not eligible to receive these companion products unless it is included in the download. These CD's are not sold separately and Elsevier does not have stocked copies of this free companion product. Please let me know if you have any other questions.Thank you,Tony CardinaleCustomer Service AmericasElsevier
This book was recommended to me by a friend and was valuable in learning more about the design aspect of building a flash animation for characters, cartoons, not so much the technical aspect of creating the animations. (Although it has valuable insights). It is valuable in the learning of flash for those who are new to the creative process of creating an animation like story boarding, animatics, camera angles, tips for making the animation of the story itself, not just the characters. Which is very valuable. The bigger picture. About characters, turn arounds, etc. The story telling and what that means. For someone who is just going to use flash for animated web banners, you don't need this book. But for anyone who is going to create character animations, you need this book.
I have been using flash since the 90's when it was sold as Future Splash Animation, and this book help bridge the gap between Flash and Video. This book provided everything as promised and more. Not only does it give detailed information on how Flash can equate with cinema, it provides excellent examples, is easy to read and easy to understand.
Excellent book, good for animation as well as live action story telling writing technique. Filled with insights, examples, and sound advice.
A bit adv for me But' im getting there. Good book for me i can recomend to others too keep it up
Flash has become a major animation tool over the years; much more so that it was originally intended. Flash Cinematic Techniques attempts to bring traditional filmmaking ideas into Flash, but is too heavy on film lecture and fairly light on actual Flash training. So much of this book focuses on things you could find in any number of basic filmmaking books. Some parts, such as composition, are very well done and suited for Flash animation, while others, like story structure and the like could've been abbreviated and left to one of the many other Focal Press books while freeing up pages for more Flash-specific stuff. Not enough of the book talks about how to pull those techniques off in Flash. And much of what it shows (such as dissolves and wipes) should be fairly evident to someone who has any previous Flash experience. It could've spent fewer pages on how light physically works and more on how to depict it in Flash. For a book on how to get the most out of Flash, it doesn't really ever go into animation, which I notice is similar to the author's other Flash books. It talks about designing for limited animation, but seems to take from more of a hand-drawn approach rather than making the most of Flash's reusable symbols. The closest it gets to actually animating something is giving you a video of a walk cycle to copy over. Some of the most useful stuff in the book is on creating warp pans and parallax backgrounds; things that are animation-specific problems. That's what more of the book should've focused on.The last section covers some ActionScript. It's definitely not for beginners, so you'll either have to know quite a bit about ActionScript coming in or blindly copy what's written without knowing how it works. Either way, it seems out of sorts with the scope of the 200-some pages before it.All in all, Flash Cinematic Techniques treats you both like a beginner and a novice at the same time, so one way or another you're not going to get the most out of this book. Even though its intentions are great it doesn't quite deliver the way it should.
"Flash cinematic techniques" is a fantastic book to learn about the artistic, movie-like side of flash animations. You'll learn how to create traditional cinematography techniques in flash. The book starts by reminding you how to build a good story structure, then shows you how to create the characters in layers so that they are maximally flexible for animation. The step-by-step exercises make this book extremely valuable. Next the book gives very valuable technical information about stage size settings for various video formats. Safe colors are discussed, and then the author shows you how to simulate camera shots, angles and movements. Chapter four is about composition of the scene and how to simulate depth in flash. Chapter five starts putting together shots to create animated scenes and discusses how to cut between scenes/characters. Chapter six is more about simulating a moving camera: panning, zooming, and parallax scrolling. Chapter seven is about lighting and effects; chapter eight is about audio, sound effects, and synching dialog to the animated face. Chapter nine brings in action script to allow the viewer to interact with the animation, and the final chapter is about optimizing and publishing your finished flash movie. Highly recommended.
